Welcome to Unraveling Mysteries of Heme Metabolism Symposium 2023

The Unraveling Mysteries of Heme Metabolism (UMHM) symposium in Cape Town, South Africa will bring together an outstanding and diverse cadre of life scientists to interact and brainstorm on new discoveries, ideas and directions in basic, clinical, and applied research on heme biology and porphyria. Sessions will be highlighted by leaders in their respective fields and with speakers representing internationally recognized research teams. The UMHM is organized to coincide with the retirement and in honor of the contributions of Professor Peter Meissner, who has had a 42 year career at the University of Cape Town, in the Divisions of Medical Biochemistry and Hepatology, where his primary focus was on disorders of heme metabolism, specifically porphyrias.
