Guidelines in pediatric respiratory diseases: from global perspective to individual care and back again

Biography

I am a Consultant Pediatrician and certified Pediatric Allergist, an Assistant Professor in Clinical Pharmacology and Pediatrics, and a Clinical Researcher. My research background includes clinical epidemiology and clinical trial methodology, with training in the Netherlands and Canada. My clinical research interests have been pediatric respiratory disease, allergy, emergency medicine, and clinical pharmacology. I have been actively involved in international research collaborations, such as StaR Child Health and the PERN (Pediatric Emergency Research Networks). I have served as a Co-Director of the Cochrane Child Health Field and as a Group Chair for the European Respiratory Society. I am currently a Work Package lead in the conect4children IHI consortium that created a paneuropean clinical trial network. I lead STAND4Kids, the Portuguese pediatric trial network, and am a Founding Board Member of the recently-created conect4children-Stichting (Foundation), serving as Chief Medical Officer.

Biography

Professor Erick Forno is a pediatric pulmonologist and Vice-Chair for Clinical Research in the Department of Pediatrics at Indiana University School of Medicine and Riley Children’s Hospital in Indianapolis. Prof. Forno's overarching research interests include the epidemiology and genomics of asthma; studying the effects of obesity on childhood respiratory health; the use of "omics" approaches to identify predictive and response biomarkers in pediatric pulmonary diseases; and the development of AI technology to improve respiratory health for children. His research is funded by the US National Institutes of Health (NIH) and National Science Foundation (NSF). Dr. Forno has served as Chair of the Program and Planning Committees in the Pediatrics Assembly of the American Thoracic Society (ATS), as Vice-Chair of the ATS Scientific Advisory Committee, and as Program Committee Chair for the ATS Section on Genetics and Genomics. He is also working to establish a Severe Pediatric Asthma Consortium in the US.

Biography

Manuel E. Soto-Martínez, MD, MSc, is an A. Professor of Paediatrics and Paediatric Pulmonology at Hospital Nacional de Niños “Dr. Carlos Sáenz Herrera” and School of Medicine of the University of Costa Rica. Graduated in Paediatrics from the University of Costa Rica in 2007. From 2007 to 2010 he completed his fellowship in Paediatric Respiratory Medicine at the Royal Children´s Hospital in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. Following his return to Costa Rica, he completed his Masters in Epidemiology at the National University of Costa Rica (2013-2015). He is currently the Chief in Clinics at the Respiratory Department and Respiratory Therapy Unit Hospital Nacional de Niños, San José, Costa Rica. Dr. Soto-Martínez has focused his research on the epidemiology of respiratory diseases (eg. Asthma, Allergies, Cystic Fibrosis, bronchiectasis, recurrent wheeze, complicated pneumonia, and other respiratory infections), Indoor and Outdoor pollution (health effects, burden, consequences in children and mitigation strategies) and Non-invasive ventilation and tech support at home in children with chronic respiratory conditions in Costa Rica and Latin-America. His love for research, education and participation in educational scientific activities has led him to travel around the world participating as a guest professor in multiple conferences, grand rounds, keynote lectures, and forums on respiratory diseases. His dedication, commitment and coordination skills have led him to be part of Central Committees of the main associations in Pediatric Respiratory Medicine in children.

Biography

Jose A. Castro-Rodriguez, MD, PhD, ATSF. I was born in Peru and graduated in Medicine from Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia (Lima) where also completed my residency in Pediatrics. I trained as a Fellow in Pediatric Pulmonary at the Universidad de Chile (Santiago). I took a position as a Research Fellow at the University of Arizona (Tucson, US). One of my major contributions was the creation of the Asthma Predictive Index (PMID: 11029352) with more than 1,800 citations and incorporated in several asthma guidelines. I was designed an “ATS Fellow” (2020) and “Master of Latin American Pediatric Pulmonology” from the Latin American Pediatric Pulmonology Society (2018). I was awarded the “Worldwide Scientific Prize” from the International Union Against Tuberculosis and Lung Diseases (2002), the “Pediatric Year in Review Paper” at ATS (2001) with more than 1,300 citations (PMID: 10954761), and the “Peruvian Scientific Prize” from CONCYTEC (1993). Currently, I am Professor of Pediatrics and Chief of Research at the Department of Pediatric Pulmonology, Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile (Santiago). My main areas of interest are acute viral bronchiolitis, recurrent wheezing, and asthma (phenotypes, treatment, epigenetic, and fetal programming). I am frequently invited to give keynote presentations at international meetings in more than 30 countries. My research and vision are well detailed in more than 200 papers. My H-Index is 57.

Biography

Professor Malena Cohen-Cymberknoh, M.D. is Associate Professor in Pediatrics at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. She is the Head of the Pediatric Pulmonology Unit and the Cystic Fibrosis (CF) Center at Hadassah Ein-Kerem and Mount Scopus Medical Center. Her special research interest fields include Cystic fibrosis, Primary Ciliary Dyskinesia, asthma, and other chronic lung diseases. Prof. Cohen-Cymberknoh actively engages in CF research, serving as the principal investigator for numerous national and international multi-center clinical trials. Additionally, she contributes to international collaborations and imparts her expertise to CF teams worldwide through teaching initiatives. Since 2008, Prof. Cohen-Cymberknoh has been invited to deliver lectures and act as a moderator at both national and international scientific conferences. Her significant contributions to the field have been recognized with numerous national and international prizes, awards, and research grants. Since 2024, she has served as an elected member of the Executive Committee for the ECFS-CTN (European Cystic Fibrosis Society-Clinical Trial Network). Her scientific publications, more than 90, include several papers published in some of the highest accredited journals e.g., American Journal of Respiratory Critical Care Medicine, Lancet Respiratory Medicine, European Respiratory Journal, Thorax, Chest, Journal of Cystic Fibrosis, Respiratory Medicine, PlosOne, and Pediatric Pulmonology.
